  • PEUGEOT unveils first  fully comprehensive online car-buying process
  • Website takes customers through the entire process of ordering a new car online, including part exchange and securing finance
  • PEUGEOT chooses UK market as the first to launch e-commerce globally
PEUGEOT has launched a revolutionary e-commerce capability, the world’s first all-encompassing online car-buying process, under the banner “Order Online by PEUGEOT”. User-friendly and intuitive to navigate, Order Online by PEUGEOT represents the first time that every step in the buying process can be completed in one place online, in one sitting.
The system offers an unrivalled level of flexibility, putting the consumer firmly in the driving seat during the purchase process; customers can build a car which meets their specific requirements, secure a guaranteed part exchange valuation for their existing car, and fund the vehicle according to their individual budget criteria, using a range of finance package deals.
The system is now live, meaning that customers can browse PEUGEOT’s model range and save details in their own, password-protected account, allowing them to think about the purchase before ‘clicking to buy’, or starting the configuration process again from the start to compare packages and cars. With a completely new web interface, built in-house by the PEUGEOT team, it is entirely feasible for a customer to go through the whole process from end-to-end, and order their dream car, in less than 30 minutes. With no need to visit a Dealer to complete finance paperwork, this “buy at home” capability remains unique in the market.
David Peel, PEUGEOT UK Managing Director, said: “The launch of our e-commerce system represents a huge step change for the UK automotive industry. The retail landscape in general has changed immeasurably over the last few years and we are not only proud to be the first car manufacturer to offer customers a truly end-to-end experience, but also honoured to be the first of PEUGEOT’s markets to unveil the system.
“Traditionally, car buyers can find visiting a Dealership daunting. With e-commerce by PEUGEOT, that pressure to make a decision is removed; the customer is in full control and can deliberate all they want over spec and finance decisions, change their minds and retrace their steps as many times as they wish.
“If, having browsed the model range, selected their car and found a finance package that works for them, customers want a test drive, they can still arrange this before committing to a purchase.”
The PEUGEOT system automatically filters the best available options for the user, based on the criteria they set. This process allows customers to reach the “magic moment” – the instant they decide to press the button to buy the product – at their own convenience.
The system even makes taking delivery of a new car convenient, allowing customers the option of either picking it up from their local PEUGEOT Dealership or having it delivered to their door.
Finance deals are also available immediately online through e-commerce, meaning that customers can make informed decisions without having to wait and search separately. The part exchange element of the system is underwritten by trusted partner, Manheim.
And the real measure of success? The system was quietly launched last week, and within 12 hours the first order had been placed, with others following quickly. The range of cars ordered spans the PEUGEOT range, from 108 to the all-new 3008 SUV, and the profile of customers is equally wide, with a range of ages and demographic profiles proving that this system will have wide appeal.

In particular, in Western Europe Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles increased its delivery volume by 329,400 units (+15.7 per cent).
Bram Schot, Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles responsible for Sales and Marketing, said: "We thank our customers for their confidence and greatly appreciate the increased demand in 2016.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has done a great job to achieve this, together with the dealers and importers all over the world. In the coming year, we want to carry on impressing customers with our completely renewed quality products and customised solutions."
Almost 124,000 vehicles were delivered to customers in Germany in 2016. This represents an increase of 11.6 per cent compared to 2015. The past year was also successful in the European volume markets: Italy (+46.1 per cent to 11,400 vehicles), Spain (+27.7 per cent to 13,400 vehicles), France (+24.8 per cent to 19,300 vehicles) and the UK (+5.8 per cent to 50,100 vehicles).

Only in South America did deliveries of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles go down last year, by 12.7 per cent to 32,300 light commercial vehicles and pickups (2015: 37,000 vehicles). This is mainly due to the economically unstable environment in the region.

  • 162,800 vehicles of the Caddy series (132,800; +22.6 per cent)

  • European car registration volume at second-highest point since 2007
  • The market was boosted by the launch of additional SUVs and higher demand for premium brands
  • Volkswagen Golf maintained its position as Europe’s most popular car model
The European car industry boomed in 2016 - with new car registrations for the year totalling 15.14 million units, a 6.5% increase when compared to 2015.
This is the second highest volume seen since 2007 when total registrations exceeded 16 million units, demonstrating that the market is proving resilient in the face of the geopolitical events of 2016 which have rocked consumer confidence.
The results show that the continuing SUV boom was the overwhelming trend of the year, with registrations growing by 21.4% - increasing from 3.2 million units registered in 2015 to 3.9 million last year. In contrast, the traditional segments grew by just 2.2%.
In fact, European consumer preferences shifted further towards SUVs, and away from hatchbacks, sedans, station wagons and MPVs. SUVs accounted for more than a quarter of total registrations at 25.6%, an increase in market share of 3.1 percentage points when compared to 2015.
In contrast, MPVs lost 0.9 percentage points, with its market share falling to 9.5%, whilst subcompacts lost 0.8 percentage points and accounted for 21.2% of the market.
In a show of resilience, Volkswagen Group maintained its lead of the market, and despite 2016 being one of its most challenging years ever - the German car maker still managed to increase its registrations by 3.3%.
The overall market grew by 6.5%, meaning that Volkswagen Group’s market share fell from 24.8% in 2015 to 24.0% last year. This was the highest market share decrease of all car groups.
In contrast, FCA, Daimler, Renault-Nissan and Tata Group all increased their market share, thanks to their wider SUV ranges and the increase in sales seen in Southern European markets.
As other manufacturers gain ground, Volkswagen Group will need to work hard to maintain its position as Europe’s leading manufacturer.
EUROPE-29 FULL-YEAR 2016 VOLUME BY COUNTRIES

“2016 was a great year for the industry, with the second highest volume of registrations since 2007. European car registrations have shown good momentum, with 27 out of 29 markets in Europe recording positive growth last year, and 14 of those markets posting double-digit increases.

I believe car makers are now better prepared to face the challenging times ahead,” said Felipe Munoz, JATO’s Global Automotive Analyst.

TOP SELLING BRANDS
Regarding the performance of brands in 2016, Munoz said “The challenges seen by VW benefitted mainstream brands such as Renault and Fiat.

The premium brands also performed very well, increasing their market share by almost 1 percentage point from 23.0% in 2015 to 23.8% last year.”

TOP SELLING MODELS

The Golf maintained its lead but lost ground in the model ranking. The Opel/Vauxhall Astra, Renault Captur, Fiat Panda, VW Tiguan and Peugeot 2008 also performed well. The highest market share gains were posted by the Hyundai Tucson, Renault Kadjar and Fiat Tipo.

  • Second-generation Superb awarded top honours by DieselCar magazine
  • Judges praised Superb’s practicality, value and equipment levels
  • Tough selection procedure with 16 shortlisted models in every category
  • Model has won more than 20 key industry awards
Proving that it’s not just brand new ŠKODAs capable of bringing home the silverware, the second-generation Superb has just been named Best Used Estate Car 2017 by Diesel Car magazine.
The title’s judging panel examined second-hand examples of every car sold in UK showrooms before drawing up a shortlist of 16 vehicles in eight key categories.
Mainstream and premium models were selected for each category before a final judgment was made. As in previous years, the panel looked for value for money, practicality and low running costs - and found that the second-generation Superb was unrivalled in every key area.
Announcing the 2017 winners, Ian Robertson, DieselCar Editor and Publisher said: “The Superb is about as effective as it gets. It has a an utterly gigantic 633-litre boot and there’s more legroom than most limousines. The ŠKODA delivers plenty of kit for your money and great build quality. Prices from £7,000 make it our used estate car of the year.”
Like its multi-award-winning successor, the second generation Superb Estate remains one of the best all-rounders on the used car market. Launched in 2010, it set new standards for practicality in the estate sector – regularly scooping awards for its spaciousness, ease of use and value for money. Indeed, during its five-year production run, it won more than 20 key UK motor industry awards - including Auto Express Estate Car of the Year on three occasions.
A range of second-generation Superb models, along with a vast range of other ŠKODA models are available through ŠKODA’s Approved Used Car network. Honda’s reputation for reliability, quality and value for money has seen the brand’s CR-V crossover named Used 4x4 of the Year by leading motoring magazine Diesel Car.
The spacious and superbly equipped compact SUV took the title after a panel of expert judges weighed up the best buys in the secondhand car market as part of the title’s annual Used Car Awards.

Examples of the CR-V built between 2007 and 2012 stood out, beating a raft of much newer competitors and premium brand alternatives to the accolade.

The judges were impressed by the CR-V’s all-round ability, appeal and equipment levels, as well as its value on the used car market and bulletproof record for dependability.

Ian Robertson, Editor and Publisher of Diesel Car, which celebrates its 30th anniversary next year, said: “The Honda CR-V may be older than many of the cars in this year’s honours list but this is a reflection on how highly we rate it.  It’s incredibly practical and spacious and a real second-hand bargain.”

He added: “Good secondhand 4x4s rarely come cheap, but the Honda CR-V is a steal when you consider the vast amount of kit and the sheer amount of space on offer.”

Phil Webb, Head of Cars at Honda UK said: “We are absolutely delighted to win this award as the ownership experience of our used car customers is incredibly important to us.”

Hundreds of Honda Approved Used Cars are available through the brand’s nationwide network of dealers and can be searched at www.usedcars.honda.co.uk

Buying a quality assured Honda through the brand’s official used car scheme offers additional peace of mind and a range of added benefits including complimentary five-day drive away insurance.

  • Unique industry initiative is in partnership with Auto Express magazine and Driver Power
  • 17 Renault franchises awarded coveted ‘Dealer of Excellence’ status
  • Award recognises dealerships that far exceed the manufacturer’s customer satisfaction measurements
  • Programme contributes to Groupe Renault UK’s increased focus on customer satisfaction
Groupe Renault UK has announced the winners of its annual ‘Auto Express Driver Power – Dealer of Excellence’ award programme that is run in association with Auto Express magazine.
A total of 17 franchises have been awarded the highly coveted ‘Dealer of Excellence’ accolade that recognises the best of the best in the Groupe Renault UK dealer network.
The successful dealerships were presented with their awards by Paul Flanagan, Managing Director, Groupe Renault UK, at the manufacturer’s national dealer conference held yesterday in Central London.

The winning dealerships were initially nominated for the award after significantly exceeding the high standard set by Groupe Renault UK in its own in-house customer satisfaction measurements. Each nominated dealership was shown to be performing within the top-tier of dealers across eight Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that rate sales and aftersales procedures and service.
Driver Power then sought to independently verify each nominated dealership’s highly-rated levels of care and service by contacting its customers and conducting an in-depth customer satisfaction survey.
The ‘Auto Express Driver Power – Dealer of Excellence’ programme was established in 2015 and is backed by the expertise of more than 15 years of conducting the annual Driver Power survey, the UK’s largest and most comprehensive independent automotive satisfaction study. It forms part of the manufacturer’s drive to position the Renault brand as a leader in terms of customer experience. Following the creation of the initiative was the announcement of Groupe Renault UK’s new Total Customer Experience (TCE) organisation, which integrates Customer Engagement, Customer Support, Product Support and Warranty. The increased emphasis on customer satisfaction also included the creation of a brand new Customer Journey team, which ensures that Renault and Dacia drivers enjoy the very best care throughout their ownership experience.
Congratulating the winning dealerships, Mark Crockett, Total Customer Experience Director, Groupe Renault UK, said: “The winning dealers can feel very proud of their teams’ achievements. Our commitment to improving quality and standards across the board has never been higher, and we established this unique partnership and initiative with Auto Express and Driver Power to offer customers a transparent, independent verification of the customer experience our dealer partners are delivering. Customers of the 17 winning dealers can rest assured that they will receive the very best service and their motoring requirements are in the safest of hands.”
Brian Walters, Director of Research and Insight at Driver Power, said: “For consumers seeking a trustworthy and satisfying sales and service experience, the Dealer of Excellence accreditation is a powerful, independent seal of approval. But consumers aren’t the only ones who benefit from the programme; accredited dealerships benefit from increased customer loyalty and word-of-mouth recommendations.”
In 2016, Groupe Renault achieved its best ever performance in the Auto Express Driver Power survey for Dealer Aftersales Service Satisfaction, with Renault topping the survey for the first time and Dacia following in second. Across the whole Renault range, customers were on average 94.4 per cent satisfied with their overall aftersales experience at a Renault dealership in the latest survey.
The significant success in customer satisfaction at dealer level follows Renault vehicles posting their best ever results in the Auto Express Driver Power survey, which is determined purely by the feedback of owners and is the UK’s largest automotive customer satisfaction studies. Out of 183 models from 32 brands, the Renault ZOE and Renault Kadjar finished in second and third overall respectively. The all-electric ZOE, Kadjar crossover and previous generation Scénic/Grand Scénic also won the Supermini, Off-road/SUV and MPV categories respectively, while the Clio took third place in the Supermini sector.
Dacia also scored strongly in the annual survey, the manufacturer being voted the fourth best manufacturer overall and the Logan MCV – the UK’s most affordable new estate car – winning the Family Car category.
The exemplary customer service showing also comes at a time when Groupe Renault UK dealerships are exceptionally busy. In 2016 the All-New Renault Mégane and All-New Scénic were launched across the network and Renault UK recorded a five-year high in sales with 85,102 Renault cars being sold and Dacia achieving its best year since launching in the UK with 26,499 sales last year.
The 17 winning dealerships are:
  • Bristol Street Motors Gloucester
  • Bristol Street Motors Nottingham
  • Bristo’s Limited Ipswich
  • Harwoods Ryde
  • Holden Norwich
  • Lifestyle Eastbourne
  • Mackie Motors Brechin
  • Martins Basingstoke
  • Mitchells Garage Lowestoft
  • Motorline Ashford
  • Renault Bolton
  • Renault Cardiff
  • Renault Manchester

DS 3 has been awarded ‘Best Small Second-Hand Buy’ for the second consecutive year in the 2017 Diesel Car Magazine ‘Used Car of the Year’ awards. The supermini is still a favourite among car buyers looking for a stylish vehicle with chic design and strong desirability.
DS 3 has once again been named ‘Best Small Second-Hand Car of the Year’ in the Diesel Car Magazine annual ‘Used Car of the Year’ awards. Preferred by second-hand car buyers due to its stylish design, frugal running costs and strong residual values, DS 3 retained the prestigious title having also won the award last year.
Announcing this year’s results, Diesel Car Editor Ian Robertson said: ‘Every year there are more and more models to choose from, and the ‘Diesel Used Car of the Year Awards’ is designed to help buyers select the best cars in eight key categories.’
Since launch DS 3 has attracted more than 400,000 customers and is testament to the car’s Parisian-chic look, it refined and attention-to-detail features.
Customer surveys conducted by the DS brand in Europe* show that some of the main reasons for purchase of a DS 3 are unique and distinctive styling, comfort and technological features.
Mark Blundell, UK Marketing Director - DS Automobiles UK, said: ’We are absolutely delighted to receive this award, as it showcases DS 3’s most important qualities. It is important for the DS brand to be recognised for creating luxury vehicles that have lasting appeal and durability to make them a great long-term investment.
DS 3 has a certain French je ne sais quoi that charms everyone who has one.’
Every year, Diesel Car appoints an expert panel of judges to examine second-hand examples of cars sold in UK showrooms, drawing up a shortlist of 16 vehicles announced in eight sub-categories.
DS 3 was crowned winner by the judges in this years’ small car section, assessed as being the best car for all-round ability, residual values, design and fitness for purpose.
*Surveys conducted between 2011 and 2015 in the G10 Europe countries with customers buying new DS 3 and DS 3 Cabrio. Survey panel: 6,000 respondents.

  • Third generation Kia Sportage wins used car of the year and best used crossover in prestigious Diesel Car Awards
  • Sportage impressed judges with its timeless design, practicality and generous equipment levels
  • Kia’s seven year warranty and award winning approved used car scheme also contributed to the victory
Less than a year after the all-new, fourth generation Kia Sportage was launched and quickly won the 2016 Diesel Car Car of the Year award, the third generation version of this hugely successful SUV has won another prestigious accolade, the 2017 Diesel Car Used Car of the Year award.

The third generation Sportage which was on sale from 2010 to 2016 was a hugely important car for the brand, boosting sales and changing perceptions of customers around the world. In the UK it sold nearly 91,000 units in total, with its final sales year being its most successful.

Much like the current Sportage, the third generation model provided customers with excellent levels of specification across the entire range, striking and distinctive design, a significant level of space, thoughtful practicality, excellent reliability and serious peace of mind, due to the brand’s industry leading seven year warranty. It’s these collective attributes which impressed Diesel Car judges enough to place the Kia Sportage ahead of its worthy second hand car rivals.

Beating more premium rivals, the Sportage also won Best Used Crossover in the awards, due to its frugal 1.7 turbo diesel engine option, engaging handling and highly competitive residual values.

Ian Robertson, Editor and Publisher of Diesel Car Magazine commented on the victory, “The Kia Sportage was a very worthy winner of this years’ used car awards. It has a hugely likeable persona, is great to drive, delivers plenty of space and generous equipment levels, plus it comes with excellent manufacturer benefits such as Kia’s seven year warranty and excellent used car scheme. The Sportage is as good as it gets as a used car buy!”
Paul Philpott, President and Chief Executive of Kia Motors (UK) Limited on receiving the award, “This award means a huge amount to us at Kia, the third generation Sportage was the most significant car in Kia’s recent history. It changed consumer perceptions; it gave us sales success and provided our dealers with a landmark model to develop their business with. We’re incredibly proud to receive this award and honoured to have been recognised at the highest level.”

Time Warp 7,000 mile MG Metro Turbo to go under the hammer at the end of February.

  • An incredibly original, low mileage 1984 MG Metro Turbo will be offered at auction by Silverstone Auctions at its Race Retro sale.
  • Just two owners from new and only 7,317 miles on the clock, offering a rare opportunity for collectors.
  • A pre-sale estimate of £16,000 to £20,000 has been given by the auction house.
A remarkably original 1984 MG Metro Turbo with just 7,317 miles on the clock has been consigned by Silverstone Auctions to its Race Retro Classic Car Sale taking place at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, on 25thand 26th February.
With just two owners from new, the time-warp, concours winning Metro Turbo is expected to tempt bidders nationwide on auction day, representing a unique opportunity for MG collectors, as well as a potentially lucrative investment prospect, estimated at £16,000 to £20,000.

“The condition of this MG Metro Turbo can only be described as ‘’,” explains Guy Lees-Milne, general manager, Silverstone Auctions. “Last year we sold a 1989 Peugeot 205 GTI of a similar calibre which soared through its estimate, selling for a new record price of £31,000. This rare, immaculate example is perfectly suited to today’s market.”
This particular car was ordered new by its first owner, Mr H.W Lamont, and supplied by dealer Lex Mead of Bexleyheath as a special factory order. The unique design featured white, colour-coded bodywork with matching painted wiper arms, mirrors, and grille, with a red and grey cloth interior.
So impressed with the car was the supplying dealer that it persuaded Mr Lamont to delay collecting the car so that it could remain displayed in the showroom. In fact, the colour combination was so successful that it subsequently became standard on the MKII model in early 1985.
Benefitting from input from Lotus Engineering Race Technology, the new Metro Turbo featured a 1275cc engine with a Garrett T3 turbo on a specially designed and cast exhaust manifold, powerful servo assisted brakes using four-pot calipers, ventilated discs up front, stiffer suspension, and also sported a new body kit utilising a front spoiler and four wheel arch extensions, neatly balancing the MG Metro rear spoiler, with Turbo-specific 13" alloy wheels and low-profile tyres.
Maintaining this example in excellent condition, Mr Lamont entered his pride and joy into several shows, winning first prize in car-club Concours d'Elegance events in 2000 and for a second time in 2001.
The car then spent a period in professional storage before being passed onto its second owner after 30 years of single ownership. The car’s equally proud second owner continued to cherish the car for another two years before contacting the specialist auction house.
“We have a superb selection of sportscars and classic cars on offer at the Race Retro sales, and this fun, sporty, modern classic Metro Turbo is a fine example of car ownership and preservation,” continues Lees-Milne. “It's also a fascinating part of British Leyland history which, with hindsight, probably played the pivotal role in 'morphing' the Metro from a 1.1litre shopping car into Leyland's most successful competition car ever.”
The car is offered with its complete history file including full service details with all the MoT certificates and all documentation, and even its original, unused Dunlop wheels and tyres, as the owner wanted to ensure its total originality.

The track requires a car which is quick off the line and can hold its own with the rear hanging out. Going from 0-60 in 3.2 seconds definitely gets my thumbs up! This very fun car will entertain the fans in the US and across the globe.”

  • Improved regenerative braking
Quality, design and technological innovation, all with a very attractive price tag
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is the UK’s best-selling Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. At its introduction in 2014 it effectively created the ultra-low emission vehicle segment, notching up 10,000 sales in the UK within the first ten months and amassing a total sales figure of 26,600 by the end of 2016.
The vehicle is derived from the third generation of the Mitsubishi Outlander (which pioneered the ‘cross-over’ vehicle design concept with the Mitsubishi Airtrek in 2001 and has sold 1.5 million units globally since launch) but was developed from the ground up to be driven by either an internal combustion engine or hybrid technology and as a result there are no compromises in terms of packaging, practicality or driving dynamics.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV offers the best pure EV range of any of its competitors, has the lowest emissions of any all-wheel drive vehicle (and remains amongst the lowest-emitting vehicle of its plug-in hybrid competitors) and is the only AWD vehicle to utilise electric power to drive both front and rear wheels for superior traction both on and off the road.
It is also the only plug-in hybrid to offer rapid charging (up to 80% in approximately 25 minutes) and adjustable regenerative braking, which is controlled via the steering wheel paddles to further enhance the driving experience.
Extensively revised in 2016, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV vehicle continues to take the automotive world by storm and now the new Outlander PHEV has arrived, representing another evolution in technology, safety and dynamic performance. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is in showrooms now with prices starting from £34,749 (excluding the £2,500 Plug-in Car Grant)
WHAT’S NEW?
EV PRIORITY MODE
For 2017 Mitsubishi introduces a new EV Priority Mode across all variants. The new EV switch is located below the 4WD button and once activated, it allows the driver to operate the vehicle in EV mode without the engine starting, provided there is sufficient charge in the batteries. An electronic parking brake is also new to the 2017 Outlander PHEV, as well as the brake auto hold button function which, when activated, holds the vehicle in traffic or on an include the same way a handbrake would, allowing the driver to release the footbrake.
TECHNICAL UPDATES
Across all variants, the 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV powertrain and chassis has been revised, with new dampers and rear suspension bushes, making it a quieter and more refined to drive than ever. Rapid charging has also been improved, reducing its charging time to 80% from 30 minutes to approximately 25 minutes, and its pure electric range is increased to 33 miles, up from 32 miles. The 2017 Outlander PHEV also delivers more performance with improved acceleration in EV mode compared to its predecessor. CO2 emissions have also been lowered by 1g/km to 41g/km, with an average weighted fuel consumption of 166 mpg – a 6.4% increase versus the previous version. Regenerative braking technology, which works to put lost energy back into the battery when slowing down and which can adjusted while driving using the steering wheel paddles, has also been upgraded for 2017 Outlander PHEV - the drive battery output has been improved by 10%.
Safety features have also been further developed and improved on the 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Forward Collision Mitigation technology, standard on the Mitsubishi Outlander 4hs and 5hs versions, now features Pedestrian Detection for added safety, while Blind Spot Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert have both been introduced on the 4h variant to assist the driver when reversing out of a space. For example, if traffic is coming from the right, the icon located on the right-hand mirror will light up, accompanied by an audio alert.
Another colour has been added to the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV colour palette in the form of Cool Silver. A shark-fin antenna is now incorporated in the roof line and there is a secure charge-point cover linked to the central locking. For a more refined exterior look, Outlander PHEV also features silver roof rails, as well as clean chrome accents on the sills.
Inside, the new Electronic Parking Brake and auto-hold button are located to the right of the 4WD and the new EV Priority Mode switches on the centre console. The console, and other key surfaces, have been finished with a black ash design and chrome accents and, as before, it is extremely well finished with soft-touch switches and ambient lighting flooding the floor area and centre console box. A four-spoke heated steering wheel, with a thick high-grip rim, fine leather trim and multiple control switches, completes the upmarket cabin feel.
THE DRIVE
Its low centre of gravity and excellent weight distribution make for exceptional driving dynamics, further enhanced with suspension updates for 2017. The Outlander PHEV offers an ultra-smooth driving experience, with a 2.0-litre petrol engine and a seamless transition between three driving modes (EV, series hybrid, parallel hybrid), which combine to deliver optimum performance regardless of driving conditions.
4WD
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is unique in offering adaptive four-wheel drive with twin electric motors driving the wheels. The front and rear axles are each equipped with their own high-output motor to deliver acceleration even more powerful than a 3.0-litre petrol engine, while maintaining an incredibly responsive 4WD performance.

  • Delivers up to 244lb/ft of torque
  • It has 1,500kg towing capacity – ideal for a medium-weight caravan
  • CO2 from 41g/km
  • Official Combined Cycle Fuel Economy Figure of 166mpg
THE THREE DRIVE MODES AVAILABLE ON THE 2017 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV:
EV DRIVE MODE
EV Drive Mode is an all-electric function in which the front and rear motors drive the vehicle using only electricity from the drive battery. With zero on-road petrol consumption and zero CO2 emissions the driver can enjoy a quiet and very eco-friendly performance for up to 33 miles, subject to weather conditions, driving style and the usage of the car’s electrical and climate control systems.
SERIES HYBRID MODE
In Series Hybrid Mode the petrol engine operates as a generator supplying electricity to the electric motors. The system switches to this mode when the remaining charge in the battery falls below a predetermined level and when more power is required, such as accelerating to pass a vehicle or climbing a steep gradient.
PARALLEL HYBRID MODE
The system switches to Parallel Hybrid Mode when the vehicle reaches high speeds. In this mode, the high-efficiency petrol engine provides most of the motive power, which is then assisted by the electric motors as required; such as when more powerful performance is needed to accelerate or climb a slope.

  • White UK’s favourite new car colour for fourth consecutive year, but demand falls for the first time since 2005 – down -2.1%.
  • 2016 sees highest number of black cars registered in the UK since 2007 – 542,862.
  • Yellow back in top 10, with 12,431 cars registered – double the figure from five years ago.
White maintained its position as the UK’s most popular new car colour for the fourth year in a row in 2016, according to data published today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
More than half a million new car buyers chose the colour last year – a fifth of all registrations – although figures show its popularity is starting to fade with demand falling -2.1%, the first drop since 2005.
White and black are the nation’s two favourite car colours – of the 2.69 million new cars registered in 2016, white (552,329) and black (542,862) took more than 40% market share.
While white maintained its lead in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, in England it was overtaken by black as the new car colour of choice.
Nationally, the third and fourth most popular colours were grey and blue, both gaining market share. Meanwhile, yellow cars appeared in the top 10 for the first time since 2013 at the expense of mauve, which dropped to 11th place.
Regionally, black topped the chart in the South East while also overtaking white as the favourite new car colour in East Anglia and the West Midlands.
However, white continued to be most popular across the rest of the country, with buyers in the South West, East Anglia, East Midlands, Yorkshire and the North all following the national trend.
Car colours: Biggest winners and losers in 2016
Going up
  • Pink may still be a niche colour choice, but last year demand grew 82.7% to 3,527 units.
  • A 44% rise in demand for Bronze cars saw a record 8,902 people spec the colour in 2016.
  • Turquoise’s popularity grew fourfold last year, from just 792 registrations in 2015 to 2,718.
Going down
  • Is brown’s time in the top 10 coming to an end? Demand fell -40.1%, dropping it one place to ninth.
  • Appetite for beige fell -27.6% to under 10,000 for the first time since 2000 with 8,426 cars registered.
  • Silver saw the biggest volume decline, falling 22,209, with 273,220 buyers choosing it compared with 843,870 in its heyday back in 2004.

All-new Q5 mid-size SUV is the recipient of the eight millionth quattro drivetrain in Audi series production history
  • Milestone Q5 rolls off the production line at new plant in Mexico
  • quattro with ultra technology is latest development step
  • Great success in motorsport as well as on the road
Audi is quattro and quattro is Audi – the famous all-wheel-drive system has been a defining feature of the Vorsprung durch Technik brand for over 35 years, and proof of that enduring appeal has been provided this week by the eight millionth quattro-equipped model to leave the production line.
Fittingly, the worthy recipient of this particularly momentous example of the all-weather roadholding and driver appeal amplifier is an all-new Q5 SUV in Garnet Red fresh from a brand new plant in San José Chiapa, Mexico.

quattro technology made its debut in 1980, and today it is available in more than 100 model versions.
The quattro all-wheel drive system is standard in the Audi Q7, the Audi A4 allroad quattro, the Audi A6 allroad quattro, the Audi A8, the Audi R8 and all S and RS models, and it is available as an option in all other model series.
In 2015, 44 percent of all Audi customers worldwide chose models equipped with quattro drive. The Audi Q5 topped the list with about 262,000 units.
The quattro models generated particularly strong sales in the United States, Canada, Russia and in the markets of the Middle East. In Germany quattro sales totaled 122,048 cars.
Audi offers quattro all-wheel-drive in different versions tailored to each model. For the compact model series with transverse-mounted engines, an electronically controlled hydraulic multi-plate clutch is mounted at the rear axle.
On the R8 mid-engine sports car, the multi-plate clutch is mounted on the front axle. According to the driving situation encountered, these active systems distribute drive torque variably to both axles.
The self-locking centre differential used in many Audi models with a longitudinally installed, front-mounted engine, is a purely mechanical planetary gear. Normally it splits the drive torque sent to the front and rear wheels with a 40:60 distribution.
The sport differential is available on the rear axle with some of the top-of-the-range engines. It actively distributes the torque between the rear wheels by means of two superposition units, each with an electrohydraulic multi-plate clutch.
In extreme cases, almost all of the torque is sent to one wheel – the system actually pushes the car into the curve, eliminating any chance of understeer.
Latest development: quattro with ultra technology
The latest phase of development from Audi is the quattro system featuring ultra technology. Designed for models with a longitudinally mounted engine, it uses an actively controlled multi-plate clutch at the end of the transmission which distributes the torque variably between the drive axles in all-wheel drive operation.
A decoupler in the rear axle differential can additionally open the connection to the rear wheels. Both clutches are opened in driving situations where the all-wheel drive doesn’t offer any advantage.
This way, the parts of the rear drivetrain responsible for drag are not engaged. The system's control unit uses a multitude of data to produce a model of the vehicle's status projecting about half a second into the future. If the system detects, for instance, that the inside wheel is about to lose grip, it switches predictively to all-wheel drive.
As a result, the all-wheel drive is always ready when it is needed. The new concept considerably boosts efficiency without diminishing traction or driving dynamics.
Success story: the history of quattro
Audi achieved a milestone in automotive history with the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system – in 1980, no other manufacturer offered fast-running and light all-wheel drive technology for high-volume production.
The technology premiered in 1980 in the Ur-quattro at the Geneva International Motor Show. In 1986 Audi replaced the first generation's manually locking centre differential with a Torsen differential which could variably distribute drive torque.
The planetary drive followed in 2005, with its asymmetrical, dynamic distribution of power and torque. The self-locking centre differential is the subject of continual development by Audi engineers and is considered the benchmark for traction and driving dynamics combined with very light weight.
Audi has also celebrated many triumphs in motorsport with quattro technology. The list so far includes four World Rally Championship titles, six victories in the famous Pikes Peak Hill Climb race in the United States, a title win in the TransAm series in the U.S., two DTM titles, 11 national Super Touring Car Championships, and a Touring Car World Cup.
The latest victory for quattro technology: In late November, Mattias Ekström and his private rallycross team EKS captured the Driver World Champion and Team World Champion titles with the Audi S1 EKS RX quattro in the FIA World Rallycross Championship.

Nissan celebrates ten years of the Qashqai, with over 3.3 million sold worldwide its a huge success.

  • Pioneering Nissan Qashqai – the original urban crossover – turns 10 in February
  • Qashqai is first to celebrate key milestone because it invented the segment
  • Launched in February 2007, Qashqai remains Europe’s most popular crossover
  • Global sales of 3.3 million units across 137 markets

February 2017 marks exactly 10 years since the Nissan Qashqai crossover first went on sale.
Nissan is the first brand to reach the 10-year milestone for one simple reason – the Qashqai is the model which pioneered the crossover segment as the automotive industry and car-buying consumers know it today.
A decade ago, there was no vehicle which successfully mixed the practicality and desirability of an SUV with the size, efficiency and dynamic performance of a compact hatchback.
The Qashqai’s innovative design and versatile packaging started life in 2002, during the development process for what was originally intended to be the new Nissan Almera. The creative team decided to go back to the drawing board and conceived a car which truly reflected what buyers were looking for, and delivered on Nissan’s brand promise – Innovation & Excitement for Everyone.
The first generation of the Nissan Qashqai went on sale in February 2007 and was an instant success. Close to 100,000 examples were sold across Europe before the end of the year, and Nissan has never looked back.
In 10 years of the Qashqai, more than 2.3 million examples have been produced in Sunderland and sold in Europe, which makes it the region’s best-selling crossover. The car has won more than 80 awards, including 19 recognising it as the ‘Car of the Year’.
In the UK in 2016, Qashqai not only remained the best-selling medium-sized (C-segment) SUV, responsible for almost one in seven sales in the class, but it was also once again the UK’s 5th best-selling car overall.
Paul Willcox, Chairman of Nissan Europe, commented: “When the Qashqai launched in 2007 it was unique in the market place. It has remained as the number one crossover because it has stayed true to its original ideals, and because we have innovated and consistently added technology through the life of the car.”
That process of ongoing improvement to the Qashqai is perfectly illustrated by the addition of Around View Monitor, Nissan’s acclaimed 360° parking camera technology. It was added to the Qashqai in 2010, when the car received many mid-lifecycle enhancements. Similarly, in 2014 with the launch of the second-generation Qashqai, Intelligent Park Assist was integrated.
Nissan’s pioneering spirit has unquestionably changed the European car market. In the decade since the Qashqai was launched, C-segment crossover sales in Europe have gone from zero to 2.6 units in 2016 alone. Almost all mainstream automotive brands now have a Qashqai rival, with 21 direct competitors in the market place. However, the inventor of the segment remains the number one model.
In 2016 Nissan sold 261,429 Qashqai in Europe (including Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan). This is a 10% market share, and represents 5.2% growth over the previous 12 months.
Success has spread beyond Europe, with global sales of the Nissan Qashqai now standing at 3.3 million units across 137 countries worldwide.

OH DEAR - Ford have been awarded ONLY 2 stars in the latest round of EURO NCAP Tests on the Mustang.

Thatcham Research, the independent automotive research centre, and voice of Euro NCAP in the UK, says that the Ford Mustang bucks the positive trend towards safer cars by not offering similar levels of safety in the UK as in the United States, and advises that there are safer choices as a result of the Two Star Euro NCAP rating it received today.

“We have not given a Two Star Euro NCAP rating to any of the top 10 car brands since 2008”, comments Matthew Avery, Director of Research at Thatcham Research.
“This really bucks the trend. Car buyers are increasingly benefitting from improved safety functionality and features, and this applies equally to cars in the sports roadster category as to family cars. We have concerns about the Ford Mustang’s crash protection of adults and children which also makes it unsuitable for having rear passengers. On top this, it does not have basic life-saving technology like Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) that is available even on the Ford Fiesta, and the recently launched Ford Edge.
“What really concerns me,” continues Avery, “is that Ford has made a deliberate choice. The car has been designed to score well in less wide-ranging US consumer safety tests and only minor updates have been made to meet required European (pedestrian) safety regulations. This has resulted in poor adult and child protection scores and the high-tech radar collision warning system that is available to US consumers, not being available here in the UK. The Two Star Euro NCAP rating is the consequence.”
In the frontal offset test, the airbags of both the driver and passenger inflated insufficiently to properly restrain the occupants. In the full-width frontal test, a lack of rear seatbelt pre-tensioners and load-limiters meant that the rear passenger slid under the seatbelt, implying higher risk at abdominal injuries in real life accidents. In the side impact crash, the head of the 10-year dummy contacted the interior trim bottoming out the curtain airbag.
Ford say that a face-lifted Mustang will be available later this year with Pre-Collision Assist and Lane Keep Assist as standard. Euro NCAP expects to test the safety of this updated model when it is available on the European market.
Other sports roadster cars rated by Euro NCAP over the past few years include the Audi TT, BMW Z4 and Mazda MX-5.
In contrast, the VOLVO S90 and V90 receive Five Star Euro NCAP ratings today as a result of their class leading safety. Both cars follow the trend set with the XC90, with excellent occupant protection, and a full suite of AEB functionality that includes pedestrian and cyclist crash prevention technology as well as its unique AEB system that is capable of identifying large animals. The S90 and V90 results surpass the best overall score of any model tested in 2016, with Euro NCAP’s top-3 best performing cars ever, all now being Volvos.
“Despite being at a different price point to the Volvo XC90, the Volvo S90 and V90 have the same levels of safety as the XC90. It does make you wonder if anything rubbed off on Ford from the VOLVO/Ford partnership,” concludes Avery.

Since going on sale in February 2015, the Range Rover Sport SVR has showcased the abilities of Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations, with just shy of 1000 being delivered to customers in the UK.

Many will have been attracted by the 0-60mph time of only 4.5 seconds, but the official figure only scratches the surface of the Range Rover Sport’s capability…
When the perfect traction offered by clean, dry Tarmac isn’t available, most sports cars immediately suffer from a lack of grip, stability and performance. But no sports car has the benefit of Land Rover’s legendary all-terrain know-how.
In this unique test, the Range Rover Sport SVR completes the 0-100km/h sprint on standard fit Michelin 275/45 R21 All Season Tyres on everything from tarmac and grass to snow and sand, using Land Rover’s innovative Terrain Response 2 technology.
The intelligent system automatically selects the appropriate driving mode to suit traction conditions including: General Driving, Dynamic, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud and Ruts, Sand, and Rock Crawl. The driver can also use a simple rotary controller on the centre console to choose a specific mode.
The times recorded are a testament to the Range Rover Sport’s inherent capability. On a notoriously slippery wet grass surface, the 0-100km/h time increased by only 0.8 seconds, while even on Sand the benchmark sprint took only 5.5 seconds.

The ultimate all-terrain performance test in detail
The Range Rover Sport SVR’s first challenge was the start-finish straight at Europe’s fastest racing circuit, Rockingham Motor Speedway in Corby, UK. In Dynamic mode, Terrain Response 2 sharpens throttle response and changes gear at higher revs.
It also stiffens the Continual Variable Damping function within the vehicle’s Anti-Roll Control technology to reduce body roll. With all of these factors optimised, the Range Rover Sport SVR blasted from 0-100km/h in 4.7 seconds.
In the second test, the high-performance SUV tackled one of the most challenging surfaces any driver will encounter: wet grass. In Grass/Gravel/Snow mode the throttle response is softened to prevent loss of traction and gear changes are smoother and quicker.
The Traction Control System also intervenes earlier to prevent tyre slip, while the central differential is preloaded to optimise off-the-line performance. Land Rover Experience East of England provided the perfect setting for this challenge and the Range Rover Sport SVR recorded a breath-taking 0-100km/h time of 5.5 seconds.
A quarry provided the ideal gravel surface, where the Range Rover Sport SVR’s inherent traction came to the fore. With the vehicle systems optimised to suit the loose surface, it registered 5.3 seconds.
To find snow the Range Rover Sport SVR headed to Jaguar Land Rover’s winter test facility in Arjeplog, Northern Sweden. Here, the optimised settings and all-wheel drive system helped the SVR complete the sprint on a combination of snow and ice in 11.3 seconds.
The next switch of the Terrain Response 2 dial was to select Mud and Ruts mode. In this setting the air suspension is raised and the Traction Control System allows controlled tyre slip to provide better traction in slippery conditions. In typically British surroundings at one of Land Rover’s all-terrain testing facilities, the performance SUV logged a 0-100km/h time of 6.5 seconds as its intelligent four-wheel-drive technology came into its own.
Pendine Sands at Carmarthen Bay in South Wales has been linked with speed ever since hosting the first world land speed record run took place there in 1924. That made it perfect to test the next setting on the Terrain Response 2 dial: Sand.
Selecting Sand mode sharpens the vehicle’s accelerator responses to allow a quick build-up of engine torque. The vehicle also holds onto gears for longer and locks the central differential to help maintain momentum. The result of this technological wizardry was a 0-100km/h time of 5.5 seconds.
The final mode on the Terrain Response 2 dial called for something different. Rock Crawl is designed to assist drivers when negotiating rocky environments and works in conjunction with the Low Range transmission, in keeping with the low-speed nature of the challenge posed by large rocks and boulders.
Rock Crawl mode softens the accelerator response to mitigate against sudden movements and provide maximum driver control. It also raises the air suspension, to optimise ground clearance. Using Terrain Response 2 the Range Rover Sport SVR scaled the rocky 32 per cent incline at the test facility with ease.
Driver Darren Jones, Stability Applications Leader, Jaguar Land Rover, said: “The Range Rover Sport SVR is famed for its on-road performance but this hasn’t been achieved at the expense of customary Land Rover capability. Our Terrain Response 2 technology takes the stress out of driving in all conditions.”
