The new, high-performance Alfa Romeo MiTo and Giulietta 'Quadrifoglio Verde' models will make their world debut at the Geneva Motor Show on March 4th 2014, combining 90 years of 'Quadrifoglio Verde' heritage with the very best of Alfa Romeo's DNA - as optimised by the astounding Alfa Romeo 4C supercar.
Indeed, the new Alfa Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde shares its heart with the Alfa Romeo 4C – under the bonnet beats the same 1750 turbo-charged petrol engine - complete with direct-injection; dual variable valve timing; an anti-lag, turbo scavenging control system and a lightweight aluminium engine block - which delivers a maximum output of 240hp at 6,000rpm and an impressive 250lb ft (340Nm) of torque between 2,100 and 4,000 rpm, with 80 percent available from only 1,800 rpm. The new Alfa Giulietta QV accelerates from 0 to 60mph in just 6.6 seconds, 0.2 seconds quicker than the current car, and can reach149mph where legally permitted.

The new 1750 turbo petrol engine is combined with the state-of-the-art ALFA TCT six-speed, twin dry-clutch transmission which offers fully automatic or sequential manual shifting, either via the gear lever or paddle shifters mounted on the steering-wheel. As with all Alfa Romeos, the driver can also customise the vehicle characteristics using the Alfa D.N.A. driving mode selector which adjusts throttle response, engine performance, transmission responsiveness (and shift patterns in auto mode) as well as the level of power steering assistance. To further enhance the QV driving experience, Alfa Romeo has also developed a new fuel intake unit to ensure the engine produces the sort of sound that is expected of the sportiest Alfa Giulietta in the range.
This impressive level of performance has not been at the expense of the environment: thanks to multiple injection control and advanced anti-friction and energy loss reduction systems, the emissions of the 'Quadrifoglio Verde' meet the strict Euro 6 regulations.
Externally, the new Quadrifoglio Verde is distinguished by the glossy anthracite finish on the door mirror, front grille, door handles and fog light bezels, and it is also equipped with large exhaust tail pipes, new anthracite alloy rims, side skirts, a rear spoiler and red, four-piston Brembo® brake callipers with 320mm front discs. And, of course, there’s the legendary Quadrifoglio Verde emblem on the front wings, like so many of its illustrious predecessors.
Interior highlights include the new leather and Alcantara wraparound sports seats with one-piece backrests; new instruments (complete with the QV logo) and a new steering wheel with leather trim and contrasting white stitching. The gear lever boot and the handbrake lever are also leather wrapped with white and green stitching while aluminium sport pedals, black roof lining and special floor mats complete the new QV’s upgrades. As with all versions of the 2014 Alfa Giulietta, standard equipment includes the Uconnect™ touch-screen multimedia system and Bluetooth connectivity.
To mark the launch, Alfa Romeo is introducing a special Launch Edition Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde. With a limited run of just 500 vehicles, 100 of which are destined for the UK market, the Alfa Giulietta QV Launch Edition is further enhanced with carbon spoilers, front and rear sports air dams and side skirts, as well as 18" alloy wheels with a five-hole design and a burnished anthracite finish. The Alfa Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde Launch Edition will be available in Alfa Red or in Competizione Red (triple coat) as well as the exclusive Matte Magnesio Grey.
The new Alfa Romeo MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde is also revised for 2014 and, as with the Alfa Giulietta, it is the powertrain that undergoes the most significant changes: Under the bonnet there’s a new 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo Petrol engine which develops 170hp at 5,500 rpm and up to 250 Nm at 2,500rpm in Sport mode (230Nm in Natural or All-weather modes). The MultiAir electrohydraulic valve management system reduces fuel consumption by controlling intake air directly via the inlet valves (without using the throttle) and reduces polluting emissions by using extremely precise combustion control.
In place of the six-speed manual gearbox fitted to the previous-generation model, Alfa Romeo’s latest-generation, six-speed, double dry-clutch ALFA TCT transmission is now fitted as standard to the 2014 Alfa MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde. As in the Alfa Giulietta, the new transmission offers automatic or sequential manual shifting, either via the gear lever or steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters, and can be reconfigured for different driving scenarios via the Alfa D.N.A. driving mode selector, which also tunes throttle response, engine performance, power steering assistance and the suspension depending on the mode.

As a result of these new technologies, the 2014 Alfa MiTo QV returns 52.3mpg on the official combined fuel cycle and its CO2 emissions are just 124g/km (an improvement of 10 and 11 percent respectively). These figures are all more impressive when you consider that this is a car that is capable of dispatching the 0-62mph sprint in just 7.3 seconds and has a top speed of 136mph.
External enhancements for the 2014 MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde include a burnished finish for exterior detailing, twin chrome exhaust tailpipes, a rear spoiler, sports rear bumper, 17" alloy wheels and Brembo® brake callipers finished in red. Once again, the Quadrifoglio Verde emblems take pride of place on the front wings.
Inside, the new Alfa MiTo QV is equipped with air conditioning, cruise control, new QV instruments, a sports steering wheel with white stitching and a gear-lever boot and handbrake lever both embellished with white and green stitching. The new Uconnect™ infotainment system is also standard, featuring a five-inch colour touchscreen with Bluetooth connectivity. Sabelt® seats with wraparound carbon fibre backrests and the Alfa Romeo logo embossed into the Alcantara® material are optional.
New QV Line
As the Quadrifoglio Verde is launched, new Alfa MiTo and Giulietta QV Line models will also be added to the ranges. QV Line model will capture the essence of the Quadrifoglio Verde but will be offered across a broader range of engines. The availability and final specification of QV Line models in the UK will be announced at a later date.
About Quadrifoglio Verde:
The Quadrifoglio Verde has been a symbol of Italian motor racing since 1923 when Ugo Sivocci first decided to race in the Targa Florio with this symbol painted on the bonnet of his ‘RL’ for good luck. Sivocci completed the 268 mile race of the Madonìe Circuit (four laps of 67 miles each) at an average of 36.7mph, a speed which was amazing at the time given the hazards and quality of the road surface.
Soon the other drivers of the Alfa Romeo team – including Enzo Ferrari, Antonio Ascari and Giulio Ramponi – decided to adopt the lucky Quadrifoglio Verde as well. From this moment on, the Quadrifoglio Verde became the symbol of Alfa Romeo race cars and was later also used on special series production models to demonstrate the continuity between Alfa Romeo’s “touring” cars and those designed for competition.
It was the Quadrifoglio Verde that stood out against the dark red of Brilli Peri’s ‘P2’ when he won the first “World Car Racing Championship” at Monza in 1925, the first of the five world titles that Alfa Romeo won. By the end of the 1920s, it was the Quadrifoglio Verde that distinguished the factory Alfa Romeos from those managed by the “Scuderia Ferrari”, with its prancing horse symbol, on the racetrack.
In 1950 and 1951, Giuseppe "Nino" Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio won the first two Formula 1 World Championships on board the Alfa Romeos 158 and 159 respectively, the renowned "Alfettas." In the 1960s, the Quadrifoglio Verde was used for the ready-to-race version of the “Giulia” and the “TI Super”, and then in combination with the light-blue Autodelta triangle on models ranging from the "GTA" to the "33 TT 12" and "33 SC 12" which were entered in the World Championship in 1975 and in 1977. The success of the Quadrifoglio Verde continued in touring car racing, culminating in resounding victory in the DTM with the 155 V6 Ti in 1993, the British Touring Car Championship in 1994 with the revolutionary 155 TS and a long series of wins by the 156 Superturismo between 1998 and 2004.
Amongst production Alfa Romeos, the Quadrifoglio Verde symbol sometimes appeared on the body without appearing in the official name: Giulia TI Super , Giulia Sprint GT Veloce, 1750 GT Veloce (which features a gold-coloured QV on its rear buttresses) and Alfasud Sprint are all examples of such models. From the eighties onwards, however, the Quadrifoglio Verde began to appear in the vehicle names, such as the Alfasud ti Quadrifoglio Verde, Sprint Quadrifoglio Verde, various versions of the 33 Quadrifoglio Verde, 75 Quadrifoglio Verde, Spider 2.0 Quadrifoglio Verde, 164 Quadrifoglio Verde and 145 Quadrifoglio Verde.
After a brief hiatus in the early part of century, the Quadrifoglio Verde returned on the highest-performance versions of the Alfa MiTo in 2008 and Alfa Giulietta in 2010. For 2014, the Quadrifoglio Verde name is officially revived, thus renewing the passion shared by millions of Alfisti all over the world and beginning a new chapter in the history of the legendary Alfa Romeo brand and the storied Quadrifoglio Verde moniker.

  • New range-extender model impresses judges with its design, performance and innovation
  • BMW and Skoda win two categories each at inaugural awards
  • Victories for Citroën, Porsche, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Jaguar and Land Rover
  • More than 100 new cars assessed by 27 expert judges
  • 11 category winners produce one overall champion
The BMW i3 has lifted the top prize at the first-ever UK Car of the Year Awards. It triumphed in the Best Supermini category before the new BMW went on to scoop the title of UK Car of the Year 2014.

The awards, which include 11 categories and one overall prize, are voted for by 27 of the most respected motoring journalists in the UK. Each is an expert in their field to ensure UK consumers get the best advice possible, whichever type of car they are considering buying.

In the overall vote, which featured the likes of the Porsche Cayman, Range Rover Sport, BMW 5 Series, Citroen C4 Grand Picasso and Audi A3, almost half of the 27-strong judging panel chose the i3.
“Alternative vehicles have made a big impression on UK car buyers in recent years, and the i3 takes things to the next level,” said John Challen, Managing Director of UK Car of the Year Awards, and Editor of ukcoty.co.uk. “It might be a new direction for BMW, but the i3 successfully retains the driving characteristics from BMW’s more established models.”
Uwe Dreher, BMW UK Marketing Director, commented on the win: “For the BMW i3 to be voted as the first-ever UK Car of the Year is real testament to the years of research and development that have gone into making BMW’s first electric production car. The BMW i3 has pushed the boundaries in every way from sustainable production, to its unique construction and revolutionary ownership proposition. The judging panel clearly recognised this and we are delighted to be given such an independent accolade.”
Elsewhere, praise came from BBC Top Gear’s Tom Ford, who commented: “i3 moves the game on for urban and inter-urban transport. It is clever, exciting, useful and desirable.”
Tim Pollard, from MSN, said that i3 “Shows that small cars can be at the cutting edge of technology – and that EVs can be desirable,” while Press Association’s Matt Joy believes that the new BMW “makes the fundamental leap for the electric car, namely that it is desirable for reasons other than its eco credentials.”

Runner-up to the BMW i3 for the UK Car of the Year 2014 prize was the Ford Fiesta ST, which won the Best Performance Car category. Joint third place went to the Skoda Octavia Estate and Jaguar F-type, which topped the Best Estate and Best Open Top Car categories respectively.

VW T-ROC concept set to Rock Geneva

Meet the T-ROC, the latest Volkswagen SUV concept, which is making its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. The T-ROC offers a glimpse at future Volkswagen SUVs: it is smaller than the Tiguan, but larger than the Taigun SUV concept, which is in the development phase.

The two-door, four-seat T-ROC combines the agility of an all-wheel-drive SUV with the airiness of a convertible, thanks to its roof design.  The middle section of the roof – made from a carbon composite – can be removed in two halves, each of which can then be stored in the boot.

The T-ROC concept measures 4,179 mm long and 1,831 mm wide, making it around 200 mm shorter than a Tiguan, and around 300 mm longer than the Taigun concept.  At 1,501 mm tall it sits around 200 mm lower than a Tiguan.
Like the latest Golf, the T-ROC is based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB) platform, and thanks to its lightweight design, it weighs just 1,420 kg.  The vehicle’s proportions are distinguished by relatively short overhangs (front: 811 mm, rear: 772 mm) and large track relative to its body width of 1,578 mm (front) and 1,564 mm (rear).  The wheelbase is 2,595 mm.  The wheels are 19-inch alloys with 245/45 tyres.

The team at Volkswagen Design, led by Walter de Silva and Klaus Bischoff, have advanced the brand’s ‘SUV DNA’ in the T-ROC, while also preserving its history.  Immediately striking are the 3D radiator grille with large honeycomb-shaped opening, LED headlights, daytime running lights and indicators and prominent round headlamp modules which hark back to the Karmann Ghia Type 34.  At the rear, LED elements also abound, with strong, purposeful design.

Both at the front and the back, the T-ROC makes use of integrated cameras which project images when driving off-road into the cabin via a tablet mounted in the centre console.  This allows the driver to see potholes or large stones which could damage the car – or certainly hinder progress.
Power for the T-ROC is provided by a high-torque (380 Nm from 1,750 rpm) and fuel-efficient 184 PS turbodiesel engine connected via a newly developed seven-speed DSG gearbox to a 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system.  This engine will be familiar to drivers of the new Golf GTD.  Top speed is 130 mph in this concept car, with zero to 62 mph in 6.9 seconds.  The T-ROC is predicted to have a combined fuel consumption of 4.9l/100km (57.6 mpg), equating to 129 g/km of carbon dioxide.

Three driving modes – ‘Street’, ‘Offroad’ and ‘Snow’ – are selectable at the turn of a wheel on the DSG gear-shift grip.  Parameters of the running gear, engine-gearbox unit and hill start and hill descent assist systems are modified depending on the mode selected.  The active mode is shown in a pop-up window in the fully digital instrument cluster.
In addition to the digital cluster, the T-ROC also features a 12.3 inch colour display tablet which is firmly locked into the dashboard with the upper two-thirds of the display extending out from the dashboard.  The multi-touch display (which reacts to finger gestures) is user-configurable, and the range of colours used and information displayed on the tablet change according to the driving mode selected.

The T-ROC’s name is derived from ‘T’ as a reference to the names of current and future Volkswagen SUVs such as the Taigun, Tiguan and Touareg, and ‘ROC’ meaning the all-wheel-drive car is as at home on ‘rocky’ trails as on tarmac.

Supercharged 1.2-litre petrol engine tops nNissan Note range as Style Pack adds a distinctive new look

  • Low emissions and strong fuel economy from DIG-S engine
  • Revised chassis settings for range topping model
  • Factory fitted optional styling pack enhances Note's dynamic design
  • DIG-S range starts at £14,495 in Acenta trim

The innovative and distinctive Nissan Note range has been boosted by the arrival in showrooms of the DIG-S. Powered by Nissan's state-of-the-art supercharged petrol engine, DIG-S promises best in class efficiency and low running costs to match its bold design and smart technology.

The advanced direct injection engine delivers the economy and emissions of a diesel with the refinement and responsiveness of a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine... yet the low-friction, lightweight and highly efficient three-cylinder DIG-S displaces just 1,198cc.

Despite its compact overall dimensions, the DIG-S (standing for Direct Injection Gasoline - Supercharged) produces 98PS and 147 Nm of torque for CO2 emission and fuel efficiency figures of 99g/km and 65.7mpg.

This advanced engine features a range of innovative features to ensure it not just meets but exceeds customer expectations. An offset crank pulley counterweight smoothes out the imbalances inherent in a three-cylinder engine while the adoption of the Miller Cycle combustion process allied to the advanced supercharger boosts efficiency.

The Miller Cycle, patented by American engineer Ralph Miller in the late 1950s, introduces a two-stage intake stroke (thus producing, in effect, a fifth stroke) by keeping the intake valve open for longer than in a conventional engine. Coupled with a higher compression ratio and with the supercharger boosting output at low engine speeds, the result is a more complete combustion phase.

Further enhancing efficiency, the supercharger has an electronic clutch which allows it to be disconnected from the engine when not required further reducing power losses through friction.

As with the Note's 80PS version of the three cylinder 1.2-litre unit and the 90PS 1.5-litre dCi turbodiesel - the DIG-S has Nissan's Idle Stop/Start system that cuts the engine completely when the car is stationary. Improvements to the system have reduced noise and vibration during the restarting process to ensure the system works as unobtrusively as possible.

DIG-S models are available with the choice of either a five-speed manual transmission or an optional XTronic. New low friction technology means the XTronic in Note is more efficient than ever, producing just 119 g/km of CO2.

The range-topping DIG-S models further benefit from 16-inch alloy wheels as standard as well as revisions to the suspension for enhanced ride and handling. Changes include new springs, dampers and roll-bars, revised steering settings and the addition of stiffening braces at the front and rear to improve body stiffness still further. There have also been changes to the VDC and ESP software to ensure a perfect match with the revised hardware.

The arrival of the DIG-S completes the Note's powertrain line-up and is expected to represent 25 per cent of sales in the UK. It will carry just a £1,000 premium over the non-supercharged 1.2-litre engine. Available from Acenta trim upwards, prices start at £14,495.

At the same time as DIG-S models arrive in showrooms, Nissan is introducing a Style Pack which is available from Acenta grade and costs an additional £800.

A full factory-fitted option, the Style Pack allows owners to create an even more distinctive and dynamic look for their new Note. Styling enhancements include two-tone diamond cut 16-inch alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, carbon look rear bumper, neat rear roof spoiler, side sills and a more aggressive front bumper with a glossy black grille and topped by black bezel headlamps. Inside there's an exclusive three spoke steering wheel.

Both the DIG-S and the availability of the Style Pack enhance what's already a strong contender in the heart of the B-segment. Built in the UK at Nissan's Sunderland Plant, new Note brings advanced technology and a genuinely premium feel to the market.

As well as highly efficient engines and an agile chassis, Note has a versatile and roomy interior plus the availability of advanced sector-first technology including the Nissan Safety Shield.

Providing tangible real-world benefits, Nissan Safety Shield brings together a number of features to make Note ownership as safe and comfortable as possible. Using cameras and sensors to monitor the area around the car at all times, Nissan Safety Shield incorporates Blind Spot Warning, Land Departure Warning and Moving Object Detection to alert the driver to potential hazards while on the move.

Nissan's acclaimed Around View Monitor, which gives a 360 degree ‘helicopter' view around the car when manoeuvring, is also available on Note, while the enhanced Nissan Connect navigation system now includes GoogleTM ‘Send to Car' software. This permits routes planned on a computer at home or in the office to be transferred directly to the car ready for a forthcoming journey.

"Nissan Note has already made a real impression in Europe with strong sales in all markets. The arrival of the hugely effective DIG-S engine and the added design enhancements offered by the Style Pack will further cement its position as a genuine force in the B-segment," said Geraldine Ingham, Chief Marketing Manager, Nissan Europe.

Renault Group has become the European leader in terms of low CO2 emissions and the first automotive group to be under 115g/km of CO2, based upon its sales of passenger cars over the full year 2013. This ranking is the fruit of the rejuvenation of its range, the success of its Energy range of engines and its electric vehicle sales.

Renault Group has moved into pole position in Europe in terms of low CO2 emissions, with an average of 114.7g/km of CO2* per vehicle (source: AAA-DATA**) based on its passenger car sales over the full year 2013.

Renault Group owes this performance to the recent rejuvenation of its ranges, notably including five models that return less than 100g/km CO2 (Twingo, New Clio, Captur, Mégane and Dacia Sandero). Indeed, in the small five-seater diesel car sector, New Clio Energy dCi 90 eco² is the class leader with 83g/km. Overall, the New Renault Clio range emits 18.5g/km of CO2 less than the model’s previous generation.

Meanwhile, RENAULT electric vehicle sales have also contributed significantly to the Group’s low average CO2 emissions.
Taken as a whole, the average level of CO2 emissions per kilometre across Renault Group’s entire range has improved by nearly 11g in 2013 over 2012, falling from 125.5g/km to 114.7g/km.

This position of market leader is proof that the combination of our powertrain strategy – with our range of Energy engines – and our electric vehicle strategy is bearing fruit. Thanks to these innovations, Renault Group is achieving tangible results and maintaining its objective to significantly reduce the long-term environmental footprint of its activities. At the same time, these improvements are beneficial for both the planet and our customers.”

  • New TwinAir 105hp engine powers the 2014 FIAT 500
  • New range-topping FIAT 500 Cult model also unveiled
  • Innovative TFT digital instruments represent a segment first
  • New colours, seats, upholsteries and alloy wheels for 2014

The 2014 Geneva Motor Show will host the global début of the new FIAT 500 which is enhanced with important new style and technological features.  A key development is the introduction of an innovative new seven-inch TFT digital instrument display, making the 2014 FIAT 500 the first vehicle in its segment to be thus equipped. The TFT display, developed in collaboration with Magnetti Marelli, brings together all the information required for controlling the car and its functions without disrupting the retro aesthetics of
the cabin.

Those familiar with the analogue dials of the current FIAT 500 will broadly recognise the layout and execution of the speedometer, rev counter and trip computer, all of which can be read quick and easily at a glance. The centre of the display – which contains a digital image of the car – can be configured to show various trip computer readouts, such as distance travelled, instant fuel consumption, range, etc. The new instruments also allow for more prominent warning messages - such as open doors, low fuel etc., and a more visible, and therefore more beneficial, Gear Shift Indicator.

The seven-inch TFT screen can also display media player and telephone information and, when fitted with a TomTom 2 LIVE satnav system*, navigation information also appears in the display, including junction graphics and real time traffic updates.

As a final touch, the TFT screen reconfigures when the Sport button is activated on models equipped with 105hp 0.9 TwinAir Turbo engine. The ‘eco’ display, which measures how efficiently the driver is performing, transforms into a turbo-boost gauge, emphasising the dual-personality of the new, fun-but-frugal TwinAir 105hp engine.

This new TwinAir engine is, of course, another major development for the 2014 FIAT 500. The new 105hp 0.9 TwinAir Turbo, the newest member of award-winning TwinAir engine family, employs a high-efficiency turbocharger,  an exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head, a Start&Stop fuel-saving system and the new MultiAir II intake valve control system to provide an even more enticing combination of power
and efficiency.

Combined with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, the new 0.9 TwinAir engine delivers 105hp at 5,500rpm and 107lb ft (145Nm) of torque at 2,000rpm in Sport mode (98hp and 89ln ft / 120Nm in ‘eco’ mode) which translates into a 0 to 62mph time of just 10 seconds and a top speed of 117mph while still achieving 67mpg on the official combined fuel economy cycle and CO2 emissions of just 99 g/km. FIAT 500 models fitted with the TwinAir 105hp engine are also equipped with rear disc brakes as standard.

The 2014 updates also see the addition of the new FIAT 500 Cult to the range. Building on the high specification of the Lounge version (which is equipped with 15-inch alloy wheels, a fixed glass sunroof, Blue&Me™ connectivity, a leather steering wheel with remote controls and air conditioning) the new FIAT 500 Cult offers a host of additional equipment as befits its position as the new top-of-the-range FIAT 500 model.

Externally, the Cult benefits from 16-inch alloy wheels with a new design; a gloss black roof panel (aft of the fixed glass sunroof); chrome or gloss black door mirror covers (depending on customer preference); chrome exterior detailing; a gloss black surround for the tail light clusters and rear parking sensors.

The interior is also equipped to the level one would expect of the top FIAT 500: In addition to the seven-inch TFT instrument panel, Cult drivers will also enjoy new leather seats as standard, either in black leather (with ivory or red inserts), tobacco leather (with ivory inserts) or red leather (with ivory inserts).

The full engine range is available in the FIAT 500 Cult: the 69hp 1.2-litre petrol; the 85hp 0.9 TwinAir Turbo Petrol (both also available with the Dualogic gearbox); the 95hp 1.3 MultiJet II Turbo Diesel and the new 105hp 0.9 TwinAir Turbo Petrol. As with all FIAT 500 models, a high level of safety equipment comes as standard with the FIAT 500 Cult, including ABS with EBD, seven airbags (including a driver’s side knee bag), ISOFIX attachments and daytime running lights (DRL). ESP, complete with ASR/MSR, HBA and Hill Holder, is also available.

Across the wider 2014 FIAT 500 range, two new body colours will be available – a retro green and new three-layer white – while the S model will be offered with a striking new blue. New alloy wheels, seat fabrics and leather upholsteries complete the revisions.

The 2014 FIAT 500 is due to go on sale in the UK by the end of April with pricing to be announced closer to the car’s launch.

  • Land Rover unveils Range Rover Evoque Autobiography Dynamic, bringing heightened luxury and increased performance
  • Most performance-focussed Evoque debuts with 285PS/400Nm 2.0-litre petrol engine, revised chassis for sharper handling and upgraded 350mm front brake discs
  • More responsive ZF 9-speed automatic transmission with active driveline as standard
  • A world first – Land Rover InControlTM Apps* enable vehicle optimised smartphone apps to be displayed and controlled with their original look and feel from the vehicle’s touchscreen

Land Rover is introducing the most performance-focussed derivative to the acclaimed Range Rover Evoque line-up for 2015: the more powerful and agile Autobiography Dynamic.

The Autobiography Dynamic derivative features enhanced dynamic body styling, 20-inch forged alloy wheels and premium leather interior details with Autobiography embossed headrests with the option for either the sports or premium climate seat. The Autobiography Dynamic’s chassis has been optimised for even sharper handling, while the top-of-the-range 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine has been upgraded to produce 285PS and 400Nm – a substantial 45PS and 60Nm increase compared with the existing Range Rover Evoque. A new and striking premium metallic body colour called Phoenix orange also debuts exclusively for the Autobiography Dynamic.

Enhancing Land Rover’s existing suite of connected-car technologies, Land Rover InControlTM Apps* also debuts across the range. In a world first, InControl Apps enables vehicle-optimised smartphone apps to be displayed and controlled with their original look and feel from the vehicle’s touchscreen. Owners simply connect their smartphone directly to the Range Rover Evoque through a dedicated USB port to enable compatible iPhone or Android apps to function.

Speaking ahead of the official world premiere for the Range Rover Evoque Autobiography Dynamic at the Geneva Motor Show, Murray Dietsch, Director of Land Rover Programmes, said: “When the Range Rover Evoque was launched, it brought a unique blend of innovative exterior and interior design and exceptional on- and off-road capability to the market. It created the premium compact SUV.

“The introduction of the new range-topping Autobiography Dynamic together with Land Rover InControlTM Apps, take the Range Rover Evoque’s core strengths a step further, bringing increased levels of dynamic ability, desirability, luxury and connectivity to the already successful line-up.”

Since its launch in 2011, the Range Rover Evoque has won 157 international awards for its combination of leading-edge design, striking interior craftsmanship, agile handling and off-road capability. With highly competitive pricing, a range of powerful yet efficient petrol and diesel engines, ‘on demand’ active driveline to enhance agility and a responsive, fuel-efficient 9-speed automatic ZF transmission the Evoque continues to appeal with more than 270,000 sales worldwide, making it the fastest-selling Land Rover of all time.

Autobiography Dynamic brings even greater performance and agility

For the first time ever, the luxurious Autobiography name features on the Range Rover Evoque. Autobiography Dynamic is positioned at the top of the range sitting above existing Pure, Dynamic and Prestige derivatives.

The new Autobiography Dynamic is the most performance-focussed Range Rover Evoque ever produced. Available exclusively with an upgraded version of the range-topping 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, Autobiography Dynamic models are also specified with active driveline as standard equipment, increasing both efficiency and agility.

The all-aluminium, direct-injection engine now produces 285PS and 400Nm, a substantial 45PS and 60Nm increase. The performance gains can be attributed to a new design of single-scroll turbocharger, recalibrated engine-management software and a new sports exhaust system tuned for excellent flow characteristics as well as an appropriately muscular sound to complement the vehicle’s enhanced handling.

Further increasing driver enjoyment, steering has been specially tuned for additional on-centre precision; the chassis also features upgraded suspension geometry, firmer spring rates and recalibrated adaptive dampers, increasing agility and turn-in response. This has been achieved without impacting on the Range Rover Evoque’s compliant ride quality.

To ensure drivers can safely experience the Autobiography Dynamic’s optimised performance, Land Rover’s engineers have fitted upgraded 350mm front brake discs.

The Autobiography Dynamic is available in coupé or 5-door body styles and benefits from enhanced dynamic styling, forged 20-inch alloy wheels finished in satin technical grey and exterior trim components detailed in Santorini black. These components include a new design of grille and lower front valance and new foglight surrounds. The vehicle also features ‘Autobiography’ illuminated tread plates and ingot badging on the tailgate and front wing vents, while darkened headlights and clear tail lamps complement the sophisticated, sporting exterior.

A Santorini black contrast roof is available as standard, while body-colour side trim visually lowers the vehicle and creates an athletic, purposeful stance. An exclusive and striking new Phoenix orange premium metallic body colour scheme debuts for the Range Rover Evoque Autobiography Dynamic.

Inside, Autobiography Dynamic customers can choose from a dynamic plus leather interior with either sports or premium climate seats in a range of four colours. The front seats also feature the Autobiography embossed logo, while the dashboard is highlighted with dark brushed aluminium trim accents unique to the Autobiography Dynamic.

The 9-speed ZF automatic transmission with adaptive shift programme has been retuned, responding more keenly to sportier driver inputs, even when left in Drive. The result is a noticeable increase in mid-range performance and gearshifts that seamlessly adapt to driver behaviour.

The transmission’s Sport mode and steering-wheel-mounted CommandShift™ gear-selector paddles provide even more driver involvement when desired.

Active driveline comes as standard equipment. A revolutionary driveline technology, active driveline improves traction, enhances agility and improves fuel efficiency by engaging four-wheel drive seamlessly and automatically when required.

The world’s first four-wheel-drive system of its kind, active driveline seamlessly switches to front-wheel drive during steady-state driving at speeds over 22mph, eliminating virtually all drag losses from the rear driveline. When circumstances dictate, the four-wheel-drive system automatically reactivates within 300 milliseconds.

In addition, active driveline optimally distributes torque between the rear wheels, whilst also having the ability to lock them together. This provides improved traction and composure off road, whilst also enhancing performance on road.

Meanwhile, torque vectoring by braking (TVB) operates on all four wheels to reduce understeer, and is included as standard equipment on the Autobiography Dynamic. TVB operates on low-grip surfaces, but its capability is extended to high-grip surfaces, ensuring even more agile and responsive handling characteristics.

Land Rover InControlTM Apps – the ultimate for in-car connectivity

The Range Rover Evoque celebrates a world first with the introduction of Land Rover InControlTM Apps*. This new in-car technology complements the Evoque’s existing infotainment system by bringing the convenience, familiarity and original look and feel of compatible smartphone apps into the owner’s vehicle.

Land Rover InControlTM Apps is compatible with the latest Apple and Android smartphones. By connecting a smartphone to the dedicated USB port, specific smartphone apps optimised for in-vehicle use will function on the Range Rover Evoque’s touchscreen, with new content available every time the apps update.

“InControl Apps puts us at the cutting edge of in-car connectivity. The Range Rover Evoque’s central touchscreen is now an extension of an owner’s iPhone or Android smartphone with the latest content always available,” said Jaguar Land Rover Group Engineering Director, Dr Wolfgang Ziebart. “Crucially, Land Rover InControlTM Apps allows other drivers of the vehicle to access their own smartphone content safely and effectively on the vehicle’s touchscreen. An in-car app experience with familiar app DNA.”

Land Rover InControlTM Apps has been developed with some of the world’s leading smartphone app developers so that they are perfectly suited for in-car use, such as satellite-navigation, music streaming, internet radio and location services. Compatible apps available at launch include iHeartRadio for Auto, Stitcher, Glympse, Sygic, Parkopedia, Hotelseeker, Cityseeker, Eventseeker, News on Board, Winston and MobileDay, with the range being continually expanded.

Also included is a productivity suite that enables easy access to the connected smartphone’s contacts, calendar and music library.

When InControl Apps is selected as a customer option, the owner must download Land Rover InControlTM Apps to their smartphone from either the Apple App Store (for iPhone 5 and later) or Google Play (Android). Once the phone is connected to the vehicle’s dedicated USB port, the owner simply taps the InControl Apps icon on the central touchscreen and selects the desired vehicle-compatible app from the menu.

Together, Land Rover InControlTM Apps and its integrated productivity suite enable busy owners to organise their day-to-day lives more efficiently, helping to strike an improved work-life balance.

Land Rover InControlTM Apps* is the latest addition to Land Rover’s suite of InControl connected-car technologies. InControl Remote allows owners to summon roadside assistance or the emergency services if required. The InControl Remote smartphone app allows owners to prepare for a trip by checking fuel levels and range remotely, find their vehicle in a crowded car park and check if they have left doors or windows open. They can also download journey details to assist in claiming business mileage expenses. InControl Secure tracks the vehicle should it be stolen.

Ford celebrates 80th Anniversary of the Iconic Australian Ute.

  • Ford celebrates the 80th anniversary of its ute – the forerunner of modern pickup trucks – based on the first sale to a Melbourne-area farmer in February 1934
  • A 23-year-old Ford Australia designer created the ute by listening to the farming family’s request for a vehicle with more utility
  • Ford’s truck teams translate customer needs into innovations more than ever, including the all-new 2015 F-150 with high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloys throughout the body
  • Ford sold more than one million pickups globally in 2013 based on Ranger growth in Asia, F-Series’ 37thstraight year as America’s best-selling truck and the “International Pick-Up Award 2013” in Europe
Ford is celebrating the 80th anniversary of its Australian invention of the iconic ute, which led to the development of vehicles such as the F-Series and Ranger and propelled the company to years of truck leadership.

Not only was it an Australian invention, but the concept has been exported to the world, reinterpreted by other manufacturers and gained a legion of fans everywhere.
The story of the first Ford ute is a key part of Ford’s rich heritage that has seen the development of such iconic vehicles as the F-Series.
Farming roots
Like all good ideas, the first integrated passenger-car based Ute was born out of necessity, very much like the first Model T Ford.
In mid-1933 the then managing director of the Ford Motor Company of Australia, Hubert French, received a letter from a farmer’s wife in Gippsland, Victoria.
She wrote: “My husband and I can’t afford a car and a truck but we need a car to go to church on Sunday and a truck to take the pigs to market on Monday. Can you help?” What the customer wanted was a vehicle with passenger car comfort but could also carry loads.
French passed the letter on to a young design engineer, Lewis (Lew) Bandt, who had joined the company only a few years previously as Ford’s only designer. Bandt was just 23 years old but was already showing a flair for design for which he was to become quite famous until he retired in 1975.
Bandt died in 1987, after being involved in an accident driving a restored version of the Utility he helped make famous.
Bandt’s take on the passenger car-based utility was considered revolutionary at the time. Until the early 1930s, many auto manufacturers and vehicle body builders had constructed wooden or metal ‘utility’ bodies on car chassis. Henry Ford’s Model T was a particular favourite and Ford T “Buckboards” and “Utility Runabouts” were to be found on farms and delivering goods in towns and cities throughout the world.
The ute is Born
Where Bandt’s design differed was that he developed his Ford utility as a coupe (two-passenger, steel-paneled, glass-windowed car) with an integrated steel-paneled load carrying section at the rear. What Bandt did was to blend the ‘pickup’ sides into a coupe body, which provided a cleaner profile and increased the load area behind the cabin.
Bandt sketched out his ute on a 10 metre blackboard, giving it a 545 kilogram (1200-pound) payload on a wheelbase of 2845 mm (9 feet, 4 inches).
He completed his original design in October, 1933, and quickly produced two prototypes for testing. By January 23, 1934, he had the final drawings and the new Ford ute went into production with Bandt christening his design a ‘coupe-utility’. When the first utes came off the production line in 1934 two were sent to Canada. The car even caught the eye of Henry Ford.
Bandt’s original full-scale blueprint drawings of the 1934 coupe utility are now archived in Australia and the rebuilt version of the Bandt coupe-utility is – appropriately – housed in a museum in the rural country Victorian town of Chewton, near Melbourne.
In its day, the Ford coupe-utility boasted a V8 engine and three-speed manual gearbox while its suspension was by transverse leaf springs with shock absorbers at the front and heavy duty semi-elliptic rear springs and shock absorbers at the rear.
The cabin was the same as the four-door Model 40 Ford five-window coupe. But, instead of the rear luggage compartment or ‘dicky seat’, Bandt added a wooden-framed utility section with steel outer panels welded to the coupe body to form a smooth-sided vehicle.
The result was quickly hailed as the ‘must have’ vehicle for the rural communities and 22,000 were sold between 1940 and 1954.
Lew Bandt’s daughter, Dr Ros Bandt said it was her father’s stunning foresight to marry beautiful design and on-the-ground practicality and make it available to all Ford customers.
“I can't imagine what it must have been like in this pressured war-torn time in the 1930s to have the vision to create an affordable Ute on the land to help with everyday tasks, both work and play and be able to connect over distance,” Dr Bandt said.
“Dad created a brilliant stylish workhorse, which is the legacy he has left to all farmers and owners who enjoy and depend on their utes worldwide. In his words; he wanted the farmer's wife and the pigs to have a glorious ride.”
Lewis Bandt’s coupe utility was a first for Ford Australia and his ingenuity had a great impact on the then developing Australia auto industry.
The original Bandt-designed Ford ute paved the way for what has morphed into what has become some of the world’s biggest selling vehicles – the Pickup or utility. It also spawned the Falcon ute, which has been a firm favourite with customers since the first Falcon XK ute was launched in 1961.
In total, Ford Australia has sold more than 455,000 Falcon utes, among the most popular being the Falcon XB, XF II, AU II, BA and current FG models.
The Australian designed and developed Ford Ranger is also widely sold in more than 180 different countries.
Global truck leadership
Ford sold more than one million trucks globally in 2013, building on the company’s truck leadership that includes:
  • Ford pickups globally represent one out of every five pickups sold
  • F-Series is the best-selling vehicle in the history of the pickup truck industry with more than 33 million trucks sold – twice as many as the No. 2 vehicle, the Model T (16.5 million)
  • F-Series became the world’s best-selling truck in the United States for the 37th consecutive year and the best-selling vehicle in the country for the 32th straight year
  • Ranger achieved best-ever sales and was Ford’s best-selling vehicle across the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2013 and earned “International Pick-Up Award 2013” in Europe
  • Ranger was the best-selling vehicle overall in Vietnam, saw sales rise 43 per cent in Thailand and is challenging to become New Zealand’s top-selling truck by overtaking Toyota HiLux in sales six months in the past two years

Louis Vuitton creates tailor-made luggage for the BMW i8. Forward-looking travel bags for progressive driving made from carbon fibre.
Exceptional luggage for an exceptional automobile. Louis Vuitton, the pioneer of the art of travel, has created a tailor-made set of luggage for the most progressive sports car – the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid.
The innovative collection of luggage comprises two travel bags, a business case and a garment bag. To ensure optimal use of space, the luggage items have been tailor-made to fit perfectly into the interior of the revolutionary BMW i8.

“BMW and Louis Vuitton share both a profound appreciation of tradition and a commitment to constant further development,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “The use of CFRP in the revolutionary BMW i8 sports car is indicative of an intelligent lightweight construction philosophy. And Louis Vuitton has demonstrated a similar belief in innovation, aesthetics and lightweight design in creating an exclusive luggage collection tailored perfectly to the new BMW i8.”
Distinguished and elegant – the design.
The understated carbon-black of this luggage range matches the colours of the BMW i8. Its sophisticated look comes courtesy of the unmistakable chequered Damier pattern – a Louis Vuitton hallmark – and a laser-etched Louis Vuitton signature. Black and electric blue used in the microfibre lining take their cue from the trademark brand colours of the BMW i8 and bag handles are made from dyed natural leather, a sign of Louis Vuitton quality. All items in the collection come with leather name tags and the iconic Louis Vuitton padlock with the exception of the garment bag.
Patrick-Louis Vuitton, Head of Special Orders at Louis Vuitton and great grandson of the House’s founder, says, “This collaboration with BMW epitomises our shared values of creativity, technological innovation and style. Our craftsmen at Louis Vuitton have enjoyed the challenge of this very special project, using their ingenuity and attention to detail to create a truly made to measure set of luxury luggage. This is a pure expression of the art of travel.”

A strong future – the material.
Inspired by the visionary design of the BMW i8, the bags and cases – like the sports car’s innovative passenger cell – are made entirely from carbon fibre. This particularly lightweight yet extremely sturdy high-tech material has been used by Louis Vuitton to create a special textile. It provides great robustness and strength, and as such is made for the rigours of travel – no matter how long and arduous the drive.
Tailored to the BMW i8 – the luggage.
The exclusive luggage pieces created by Louis Vuitton fit snugly into the BMW i8. The Weekender GM i8, with both hand and shoulder carry straps, is custom-designed to go into the boot, while the Garment Bag i8is a perfect fit for the rear shelf of the BMW i8. The sturdy hardshell Business Case i8 which is also ideal for carrying laptops, matches the shape of the rear seats; while the small Weekender PM i8 is designed to rest on its surface.
The Louis Vuitton luggage series will be available upon request in a selection of Louis Vuitton stores worldwide (Munich, Milan, London, Paris, Moscow, Dubai, New York, Los Angeles) starting April 1st 2014.

Revolution in sports cars – the BMW i8.
The BMW i8 is the  most progressive sports car and is the BMW Group’s first plug-in hybrid vehicle and the second model from the BMW i brand. It is a 2+2-seater boasting visionary design and intelligent lightweight engineering. As a plug-in hybrid,  the BMW i8 unites the advantages of innovative electric drive and the latest combustion-engine technology. The upshot is an extraordinary driving experience that delivers the dynamics of a sports car (0 – 100 km/h / 62 mph in 4.4 seconds) along with fuel economy and emissions figures of a small city car  (2,1 l/100km / 49 g CO2/km). This means not just purely electric emission-free driving around town but also sporty performance on inter-urban routes. The athletic personality of this revolutionary sports car is patently manifest in its design: classical sports car proportions, spectacular gullwing doors, clean, minimalist lines and a low-slung silhouette all imbue it with its powerful, dynamic shape. The sporty character of the BMW i8 exterior makes a seamless transition into the interior’s future-focused design.

USA - Buick Encore wraps successful first year of sales.

Closing its first full year, the Encore became the Buick lineup’s fifth model and second crossover, ringing up sales success in one of the industry’s fastest-growing segments.

Entering the small SUV and small luxury SUV segment in the U.S. at the end of last January, the Encore helped boost sales in a rapidly expanding market that just last year alone, grew by 52 percent from 2012.

“Right out of the gate, demand for the Encore was high,” said Tony DiSalle, vice president of Buick marketing. “It accounted for most of the segment’s growth last year and that’s because it offers the right safety, technology, and features in the right-sized vehicle for many customers.”

As one of the first luxury crossovers of its size, Encore’s U.S. retail sales reached 31,046 units during its first full year of sales. Globally, the Encore sold 97,311 vehicles in calendar year 2013, helping Buick set its global sales record of 1,032,056 last year.

“The small SUV segment looks like the next hot spot in the new-car market,” said Karl Brauer, senior analyst for Kelley Blue Book. “The combination of functionality and fuel efficiency offered by models like the Buick Encore makes them a compelling value equation for consumers.  We're seeing rising research activity in these models from users of KBB.com, and we expect sales to grow in the coming months and years.”

Encore’s early entry to these segments is significant. Combined, the segments are expected to more than double in sales between now and 2018.

The Encore earned an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety 2013 Top Safety Pick and 5-star Overall Vehicle Score for safety from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

It also ranked highest in the Sub-Compact CUV segment in the 2013 J.D. Power Initial Quality StudySM and among others, was named the winner of Kelley Blue Book’s 2014 5-Year Cost to Own awards in the Luxury Compact SUV/Crossover category.

Encore customers cite good fuel economy, high quality and exterior design as the top reasons for purchase, with one in two buyers coming from a non-General Motors brand.

The Renegade is "designed in America and built in Italy," Jeep said in a statement.

Built on Fiat's "small wide" platform, the "baby Jeep" will be sold only with four-wheel drive, including a Trailhawk Trail Rated version, and will offer both gasoline and diesel engines.

The Renegade interior is "robust and lively," the company said, "in keeping with Jeep heritage," and comes equipped with voice-activated 5-inch or 6.5-inch touchscreen.

It will be the first small SUV to offer a nine-speed automatic transmission, Jeep said. An open air version will also be offered.

The company did not reveal price or any technical specifications other than to say that its diesel MultiJet II and gasoline MultiAir engines will be made in Italy, the United States and Brazil.

The Renegade is key to Jeep's target of selling 1 million vehicles worldwide this year, up 37 percent from a record 731,565 last year. The model arrives at a time when Europeans are snapping up smaller SUVs despite weak car sales and many U.S. customers are looking to downsize into a smaller SUVs.

The Renegade will be built at Fiat's plant in Melfi, central Italy, alongside Fiat brand's sibling model, the 500X.

The Jeep version will go on sale in Europe in the summer and in the United States late this year, while the 500X will be unveiled at the Paris show in October and appear in European dealerships by year end, and in spring 2015 in the United States.

The company has not released sales targets, but supplier sources have told Automotive News Europe that Fiat and Jeep plan annual production of up to 280,000 units of the two models. Jeep's volume will be about 150,000, while Fiat's version will account for 130,000 units.

In Europe, the Renegade and the 500X will compete against small crossovers such as the Nissan Juke, the segment's leader, Opel/Vauxhall Mokka, Peugeot 2008 and Renault Captur.

The Renegade comes to market just as European car sales are starting to recover from their six-year slump and amid a dearth of product for Fiat, Jeep's owner. Automotive consultancy IHS forecasts subcompact SUV sales of 640,000 units in western Europe this year, up from 550,000 in 2013 and 345,000 units in 2012.

The Renegade is the second Jeep to be built on a Fiat platform after the new Cherokee mid-sized SUV launched last year.

Alfa unlikely to get Mazda-made roadster, sources say

Fiat or its Abarth performance subbrand are likely to get a roadster from Mazda instead of Alfa Romeo, sources say.

Fiat and Mazda product planners plan to meet soon to discuss the potential badge change for the MX-5-based two-seat car, the sources added.

Alfa, which will debut a concept version of its planned 4C convertible at the Geneva auto show on Tuesday, was supposed to get the Japan-build roadster at the start of next year.
Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne, however, put that plan in doubt when he told the Financial Times last September that there won't be any Alfas built outside of Italy as long as he is boss. Marchionne plans to stay at Fiat-Chrysler until at least 2017.

Marchionne reconfirmed at the Detroit auto show in January that no Alfas will be built outside Italy, but declined to discuss the future of the roadster that Mazda is supposed to make for Alfa.

He said more details about future Fiat Group products would be revealed in early May.

The sources say that Fiat's product planners in Turin are looking for ways to fulfill the terms of their supply contract with Mazda because walking away from the deal would be extremely expensive, something Fiat wants to avoid as it aims to return to profit in Europe by 2016 after posting heavy losses in the region last year.

The sources didn't say which other brand is the most likely to add the roadster. Fiat's other near-premium brand, Lancia, is not in contention for the car because Marchionne has decided to reduce the 108-year-old marque to a one-model brand, the Ypsilon, that only is sold in Italy. Lancia will be discontinued outside its home market starting this year.

The planned 1.4-liter turbo-gasoline roadster probably would be too small and underpowered for supercar brands Ferrari and Maserati. That leaves the Fiat brand and Abarth.

"Abarth really makes sense for a lightweight, small displacement, high-output two-seat roadster, which perfectly fits the brand's DNA," one of the sources said.

During previous discussions about the Alfa-Mazda roadster, Fiat said that the car would be an heir to the legendary Duetto Spider driven by Dustin Hoffman in "The Graduate." Mazda will build the roadster at its factory in Hiroshima.
